Mashad Rugs

The capital of Khorasan province is an important centre of the rugs weaving industry. Almost all the rugs produced in the province are marketed there with those, of course, which sue made in the city itself and those made by the Baluchis who are nomadic in the eastern part of this region, whose products are known by a name which misleads into assuming some connection with the country of Baluchestan. The Mashhad rugs are made of the wool peculiar to the whole province of Khorasan very soft and very lustrous though perhaps rather less hardwearing than other Persian wools. Formerly the palm-leaf pattern in various sizes was much used, as it was for other kinds of Khorasan rugs, the Herati design was used, too, which made its way into Khorasan at a comparatively early period owing to the proximity of Herat. Today, besides these patterns, which are being used less frequently, a well-drawn design of artfully entwined arabesque medallions with corner-pieces is particularly noteworthy. Area rugs with a plain ground of dark red or, more rarely, of dark blue are also produced. The Herati border is frequently applied. Apart from synthetic indigo, which has all the advantages of the natural dye, one rarely meets with artificial colors.
The dimensions of the Mashhad rugs range from Namaze and Sadjadeh to larger sizes of from 3 feet 4 inches by 10 feet to 13 feet by 19 feet 6 inches.
