Bidjar Bijar Persian Rugs

Bijar describes those Persian area rugs which are immediately distinguishable from others by the thickness of their pile. They have long been manufactured in the city of Bijar and its environs. To some extent the term is applied also to rugs produced in the surrounding district of Gerus, but whereas the genuine Gerus rugs almost always display the same pattern (the so called Do-Gule, a design of rosettes and palmettos, endlessly repeated) the pattern of the Bijar rugs is hardly ever geometrical, but marked by great diversity, ranging from the smallest Herati rugs pattern to very large palmettos, like those in the vase rugs. The background of these rugs may be uniform, or covered with a design of corners and medallions, or without medallions.
Bijar is a large city to the
north west of Hamedan, has long been important as a rug making centre. It also keeps Gerus rugs supplied with patterns and orders. The characteristic of the Bijar rugs is a comparatively long pile on a two fold warp. The lengths of yarn in these rugs so protrude from the foundation that a Bijar's can scarcely be folded in the usual manner, with the back outside. To do so might easily break the warp and weft threads of the rug.
Bijar rugs should therefore be folded face outwards. The weft threads are comparatively numerous, and strong.
