| From time immemorial, rugs have been knotted in Yazd. The Yazd rugs are mostly room-rugs of the usual sizes. Runners are also made. The Yazd rugs have some resemblance to the older Kerman rugs, and both kinds have a rather purplish red in common. The designs of these rugs are medallions with corners and patterns of flowers, among which we find a rather elongated and somewhat enlarged Herati. In and around Yazd, a knotted carpet is woven of cotton yarn for domestic use but rarely for export, the patterns being simple and mostly geometric. The colors, curiously enough, are mainly blue and white. The result is very pleasing, but perhaps a little too vivid for Western furnishing taste. On the other hand, these rugs would be very suitable for verandas, loggias, winter gardens, etc. In size, the cotton rugs from Yazd vary from the smallest bedside rugs to about 3 feet 4 inches by 10 feet. |
